Babbage delivered a multi-discipline engineering solution for Air Liquide, with a targeted site upgrade that unlocked new operational space and improved site logistics.
The project included the construction of a new concrete tank pad, a retaining wall, and stormwater improvements. These upgrades were carefully designed to optimise site logistics and enable safer, more efficient truck movements to support Air Liquide’s production operations.
A key element of the design was the installation of a 2.5 m retaining wall along the eastern boundary, cut into the existing bank. This enabled the creation of a lower platform for storage tanks and a higher pad for vapouriser units, improving the functionality and organisation of the site. Stormwater drainage across the area was also enhanced, with four new soak holes installed in locations determined through the civil engineering design. All works were carried out in accordance with relevant local and national engineering standards.
The project has effectively unlocked a previously underutilised part of the site that had been constrained by its topography. By incorporating the retaining wall into the design, the area can now be used for storage vessels and associated equipment, improving the overall efficiency of the facility.
Delivering the project required a coordinated, multi-disciplinary approach between Babbage and constructors First Principles. The project was led by Babbage’s Project Management team, working closely with our Civil, Structural, and Geotechnical Engineering teams to ensure the design and construction phases were seamlessly integrated. This approach allowed technical queries from site to be addressed quickly and helped maintain progress throughout construction.
Project Manager Michael Goulding reflected on the delivery of the works: “It was a challenging job on difficult terrain, but the team did amazing to respond to technical queries from site in a timely manner to keep construction progressing. All the major milestones were achieved on schedule, which is a testament to the collaborative efforts from all involved.”
As a key client, Air Liquide maintains a strong commitment to safety and operational excellence. Babbage and First Principles worked together to meet these standards throughout the project and are proud to celebrate the successful completion of the new tank farm facility.
This project highlights Babbage’s ability to deliver integrated engineering and project management solutions, supporting clients with practical, safe, and efficient infrastructure outcomes.
