Lake Te Koo Utu Stormwater Quality Improvements

We were engaged by Waipa District Council to provide water quality improvements to the lake, and the downstream receiving environment.
The project involved designing a series of rain gardens to treat runoff discharging into the lake from the pipe network. This approach supports stormwater management, improves the ecological health of the area, and expanded the range of ecological benefits and services.
Our design also included retrofitting better gross pollutant traps into existing structures.
Innovation
Innovative raingarden media to provide a high level of treatment in a small footprint. Collaborating with landscape designers to enhance the amenity alue of the project area. Bespoke GPT design that offered high volume gross pollutant removal for a fraction of the cost.
Challenges
The sites of proposed rain gardens were in the town centre adjacent to busy roads and businesses. As such, the raingardens needed to be carefully integrated into the landscape. There were gaps in the asbuilt information of the stormwater network that made it challenging to retrofit the raingardens and gross pollutant traps. There was no information on the gross pollutant loads warranting an iterative design. Bespoke GPT design that offered high volume gross pollutant removal for a fraction of the cost.
