Babbage provided a comprehensive range of design services to support the re-development of a 3.5 ha brownfield site in Penrose. The project involved upgrading the existing facility to accommodate a 17,600 m² timber frame and truss manufacturing operation, requiring careful integration of new infrastructure within the constraints of the existing site.

A key focus of the project has been optimising the use of existing buildings and infrastructure while implementing targeted upgrades to support long-term performance. This included designs for existing pavements and heavy-duty yard areas, alongside stormwater design utilising ground soakage. Given the site’s location over a central aquifer and flood path, the design also addressed flooding behaviour and overland flow paths to ensure a resilient and compliant outcome. New water supply and utility services have been integrated into the design to support both current operations and future expansion.

To support production and logistical needs, we worked closely with the client to map movement patterns and spatial requirements. This included designing bulk material storage areas with varying levels of storage environments and incorporating carefully considered fire risk assessments. Additionally, we devised efficient material movement strategies to support multiple production lines operating 24/7. Implementing staging methods for finished products in various shapes and forms helped to alleviate congestion during peak forklift and truck movements, thereby enhancing the overall health and safety of the operation.

Babbage has delivered full design to support resource consenting, Building Consent, procurement, and construction, including coordination with multiple stakeholders and disciplines.
