The Project

Pacifica is a reimagined Pirate Ship ride at Rainbow's End, delivering a classic amusement park experience with modern engineering and immersive visitor features. Babbage provided a multi-disciplinary design service, bringing together geotechnical, civil, structural, survey, and building services expertise to support the successful delivery of the project.

The project required close coordination between local design and construction teams, with the ride manufactured in Germany and assembled on site by an international specialist team. Babbage also continued its long-standing relationship with Rainbow's End, building on previous work that has included foundation design for Kidz Kingdom and rides such as Fearfall and Stratosfear.

The Design

Although the ride appears simple in operation, its engineering is highly demanding. The continual swinging motion generates significant cyclic loads that are transferred into the foundations, requiring careful consideration of structural performance, ground conditions, and long-term durability.

A key challenge was designing around legacy foundations from the original Pirate Ship while ensuring the new ride met modern engineering and construction standards. Precision throughout the design, survey setout, and construction process was critical to achieving the required tolerances for the ride installation.

Beyond the structural design, Babbage's building services team played an important role in creating the overall visitor experience. The team integrated the ride's power, lighting, sound, and communication systems, helping deliver the immersive environment expected of a modern theme park attraction.

Innovation

The project's success came from the integration of multiple engineering disciplines to solve complex technical challenges within an existing operational theme park. Careful coordination between international suppliers, specialist installers, and local engineering teams enabled the new ride to be delivered while working with existing site constraints and legacy infrastructure.

By combining robust foundation and structural design with integrated building services, the project delivers both the engineering performance required for a high-load amusement ride and the engaging experience enjoyed by visitors today.
