The Piroa Conservation Trust (PCT), responsible for the Ruakākā River and surrounding 23,000-ha catchment, sought a structured approach to improve freshwater quality and mitigate environmental concerns such as erosion, sedimentation, and contamination from E. coli, nitrogen, and phosphorus. They required a catchment-wide Action Plan to guide stakeholders and secure funding for conservation initiatives.
BEnviro (a Babbage company) led a comprehensive spatial analysis and stakeholder engagement process, conducting site visits, literature reviews, and applying terrestrial and freshwater ecological expertise to develop a tailored Action Plan and digital mapping tool. The tool enables:
Identification of priority conservation areas
Collaboration between landowners and stakeholders
Informed decision-making using spatial data
Funding applications for environmental projects
The Action Plan Portal and Catchment Viewer provide an interactive, user-friendly platform, allowing PCT to visualise environmental challenges and engage effectively with the community. By leveraging digital mapping and geospatial insights, Babbage has enhanced conservation planning, enabling data-driven solutions for sustainable freshwater management.
